Redefining ‘Park’ for the 21st Century: Open Space

The project emerged from a collective need across the county to address how authorities can develop and design recreational facilities for potentially controversial needs (such as skateboard parks and bmx tracks) whilst also needing to address healthy living areas for children, families and older people.

As well as encouraging various groups of users to share and enjoy a pleasant, landscaped space throughout the day for a range of different activities, this approach also aims to support improved bio-diversity on the space.

Following case study meetings, research, creative management sessions and workshops with young people (including students at University of Herts), the final document incorporates all issues arising from the research in a format that mirrors the Green Flag objectives and addresses the PPG17 and PPS 9 policies to assist Hertfordshire with their ambitious Green Flag targets under the Cleaner, Safer Greener LAA block.

Lorna Green, Artist, said:
As a sculptor and environmental artist who frequently works on large scale projects -parks, earthworks,and courtyards-  used and enjoyed by the public throughout the world, I have come to appreciate the value of working in a team of all involved parties. Each member of the team brings their own area of expertise from which we all learn resulting in a workable and exciting project.”

Catherine Davis, Arts Development Officer, said:
“This cross-county project has grown from the voices of Hertfordshire Association of Cultural Officers (HACO)and several district and borough authorities. All individually are looking for creative solutions towards skate parks, trails and healthy living infrastructure that will develop a more sustainable area for the whole community.”
