Following a successful application to the Big Lottery Fund, Hertfordshire County Council is redeveloping the library at South Oxhey. The Green Heart Partnership has facilitated this Perception Area: Snapshot project with the local community, looking at use and future services that can be delivered from the new refurbished South Oxhey Library. This work has supported HCC's development of a Community Engagement Strategy for the library. The South Oxhey Library Book is the outcome of the work of international artist team Simon Grennan and Chris Sperandio, known as the Kartoon Kings, who worked with local residents in South Oxhey to discover what their ideal library service would be like. The publication of the book was celebrated at a Tea Party at the Library on Saturday 19 July 2008. The event was well attended by library staff, council members, 165 local residents and a representative from the Big Lottery. The event, largely organised by the library staff, included musical rhyme time and stories for children and thank you speeches. 500 books were distributed to households in Northwick Ward, in the immediate vicinity of the Library, as a gift from the artists, and their fellow residents. Copies of the book are also available for loan in the new Library along with an archive of the project. The outcome of this engagement has already been used by the HCC to support the continued development of the library’s community engagement plan, recently submitted to the Big Lottery. "Thanks to the National Lottery funding we received last year we have enormous scope to upgrade the South Oxhey library building itself and open up the range of services and activities for local people. We hope that, with the help of this highly imaginative form of consultation through the Green Heart Partnership and the Kartoon Kings, local people will be keen to help us to build up a picture of how library services in Oxhey should develop, through their ideas, views and suggestions.” said Executive Member for Education and Culture, Keith Emsall 19 July: South Oxhey Book launch!
