Consulting Creatively with the Community: Sele Farm

Having recently begun a rebuild of a new community centre on the Sele Estate, one of the most deprived areas of East Herts District, the council were keen to engage with the broad range of the community on the estate, including hard-to-reach individuals and groups, rather than the usual limited group of older community centre users.

Sele Farm Play Area

The Sele Farm Estate is among the most challenging areas in East Hertfordshire, with the highest levels of council or social housing in the district, and nationally high levels of divorce, separation and poor health.

Through GHP the team in East Herts asked digital media artist, Karen Lois Whiteread, to creatively consult with the community on the Sele Estate about the centre and the open space around it, and capture their perceptions and aspirations on DVD.

The resulting film ‘It’s All Going on At Sele’ has been used by council officers, members and the newly formed management committee for the community centre, to inform the future development of the programme at the community centre and the open space around it.
