Watford’s Green Heart Team came together to work with artists to find a way of turning a busy transport interchange into a visually interesting, interactive and informative space, which celebrates the heritage of the site. The project has been funded by GHP, Watford Borough Council and Hertfordshire Highways.
Digital artist, Rayna Nadeem, is working in the area around Bushey Arches to record the community’s perceptions of the areas, and their knowledge of environmental issues on DVD. Tony Stallard, a light artist has also been commissioned to work alongside Rayna to find out from officers what the possibilities are for using art and technology to communicate information and transform the space into an impressive gateway to Watford.
Rayna Nadeem has consulted over 80 people across a wide range of ages and backgrounds, 70 of whom agreed to be filmed for the DVD. The DVD and its supporting report / booklet will be available in early October. The results of this consultation will then inform the capital regeneration of Bushey Arches, to include interactive light art as an education tool to engage the community in their environment.
GHP spoke to the artists, Rayna and Tony, and Andy Smith of Herts Highways about how this approach is supporting better connections between the two stages of the project.
