It is important to remember that local, long-standing members of the community can act as incredibly valuable champions. With an artist living on-site in one of the estate’s flats, it was incredibly valuable that artist, Simon Honey, had support from the trusted members of the community. Outside of the officers and councillors were Andrew Brace, the Local Shop Manager whose family has been a part of the estate for 22 years and Stan Bennett, the estate caretaker for 26 years.
Andrew’s shop is at the entrance to the Estate and connected to the community centre that is to be redeveloped. Not only does he see much of the community through his shop, but he is also the licensee for the bar within the community centre and therefore knows the hirers, as well as the users. He has taken the business over from his father and grew up in the flat connected to the shop.
Stan is also a well-respected, well-liked pillar within the community. He has seen the estate and community profile change over almost 3 decades and carries pride in providing the best service to the community. In addition to his interest in an improved facility that can accommodate more user groups, he also has expertise regarding the challenges of ongoing maintenance that can be incorporated into the design at the earliest point in the process.
The support and enthusiasm from these local champions has ensured that Simon has had support, publicity, and introductions daily. These partners can affect the difference between reaching individuals and reaching only the small vocal groups.
